What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (A.R.T)?

A.R.T is a peer-reviewed evidence-based treatment that is highly effective for treating psychological trauma within 1-5 therapy sessions. Sessions typically last 60 to 90mins. The technique involves the use of eye movement and visualization allowing client(s) to erase old distressing images by re-writing a new story through reconsolidation as well as changing the physiological response to the unwanted memory.

How it Works

Although originally designed to treat trauma, A.R.T works for a wide range of problems due to the brain’s ability to positively modify unwanted material. The bilateral stimulation (BLS) of the eye movements activates both brain hemispheres to replicate the rapid eye movements that naturally occurs during sleep. In this state, the brain consolidates emotional information that moves stuck (and unwanted) memories to logical storage.

Activating a State of Calm

The process shifts the nervous system out of fight or flight by activating the parasympathetic nervous system—promoting a state of calm. It is within that state of calm that allows the unwanted working memory to fade. Moving the eyes back and forth taxes the conscious working memory; which further lessens the vividness and emotional charge of the negative thoughts connected to the unwanted memory.

The Power of Visualization

Distancing emotional responses to problems (or unwanted memories) facilitates the opportunity to look at situations objectively when the client is in a state of calm. This gives the client the opportunity and choice to create positive memories by visualizing a different image—reprogramming the distressing images and memories by creating new ones.
